EDP Feature – 22nd January

As The Shed reaches a critical point in its future, the project has received an award recognising its positive community work.

On Saturday, January 19, Wymondham Town Council awarded its annual Civic Award to Barry Rooks at a reception held at the Dell bowls club on Norwich Road.

Fellow volunteer Steve  Lyne joined the founder at  the ceremony and they  dedicated the award to the  team of men behind the conversion of their current headquarters at The Arc on Ayton Road.

Following the presentation hosted by mayor Tony Holden, Mr Rooks said he was feeling optimistic about securing  the essential funding to keep  the project running and  that receiving the award would help with future funding  bids.

Mr Holden said the council had unanimously agreed  that the 2019 award should  go to the project and that  they hoped it would help  make more men aware of the service.

Message from the Chair of The Shed WymondhamI have just had my 5-year anniversary from taking over the running of The Shed. As many of you may know, my health issues are worsening, and I feel the time is right for me to step down as Chair. This will take place at our AGM in July this year. I have enjoyed every minute and all aspects of The Shed over those years and have made many great friends within The Shed and people in the Wymondham Community too. The Shed has also grown over those 5 years – our membership seems to increase each month, bringing new skills and knowledge along the way. From 5 men setting up a community group with 10 or so members in 2019, to a registered charity with 4 Trustees, 9 Management Committee members and around 70 Shed men and women members – it’s been quite a journey! Even through the “Pandemic Years” we managed to have weekly Zoom calls to keep members connected and the forming of the women’s group as we emerged from Covid was amazing – doubled our membership within a very short time. I will still be a member as there’s many more ideas I have for my own projects and there is no better place to do that than The Shed. I want to thank all the Management Committee members for their help and support. Also, thanks to all Shed members for being part of a fantastic project – The Shed Wymondham.We are looking for a volunteer to take on the Chair role in the running of The Shed in the near future.
