The Shed Wymondham is a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practiceskills and enjoy making and mending. The difference from a garden shed is that their activities are often solitary in nature while The Shed is the opposite. It’s about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter.

The Shed is whatever its members (or Shedders as we call them) want it to be.

We are CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) Charity. We have a board of Trustees who have overall responsibility and many members who help in the running of the project.

The Shed is currently located in a two storey building on an industrial estate in Wymondham. It gets involved with many community groups and projects within Wymondham and the surrounding areas.

Activities in The Shed vary greatly, but you can usually find members woodworking, metalworking, repairing, restoring and much more.

Whatever the activity, the essence of The Shed is not a building, but the connections and relationships between its members and the Wymondham Community.

Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and unlike women of a similar age, less older men have networks of friends and rarely share personal concerns about health and personal worries. It is not the case for all men, but for some, when retirement comes, it can feel like personal identity and purpose is lost. The Shed can change all of that.

Due to popular demand, the Shed Wymondham has started a Women’s Group. An initiative which was unfortunately delayed due to the Covid pandemic.

Under “The Shed Wymondham” umbrella, we can offer all the same facilities and resources as the Men’s group, but also incorporating other crafting and skills normally associated with women.

We are also looking for women who maybe interested in assisting in the smooth running of the women’s group. You do not necessarily need any crafting skills but have a desire to help establish the group at The Shed.

Members can bring their own crafts to work on in a lovely spacious environment, or learn new practical skills in one of the multi-function workshops.  You can be trained in a variety of power tools, or get to use our substantial suite of fixed equipment. We will provide all the training and the space to work.

If you just want to come along to meet and chat to others without crafting or using power tools that’s fine too!

Our aim long term is to also have a mixed day with both men and women working together, particularly on Wymondham Community projects.

The Shed is about meeting like-minded people and having someone to share your worries with. They are about having fun, sharing skills and knowledge with like-minded people and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. As a by-product of all of that they reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, they allow members to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent, they rebuild communities.
